Belladonna (Deadly nightshade)

Source: Atropa belladonna; family Solanaceae. Plant kingdom.

Key notes: Has a very pronounced action on every part of the nervous system, producing active congestion, furious excitement, perverted special senses, twitching, convulsions and pain; marked action on the vascular system, skin and glands; always associated with hot, red skin, flushed face, glaring eyes, throbbing carotids, excited mental state, hyperaesthesia of all senses, delirium, restless sleep, convulsive movements, dryness of mouth and throat with aversion to water; neuralgic pains that come and go suddenly; heat, redness, throbbing and burning; sudden and violent onset.

Mind: Patient lives in a world of his own, engrossed by spectres and visions and oblivious to outside realities; while the retina may be insensible to actual objects, a host of subjective visual hallucinations crowd upon the brain; delirium with frightful images, furious, rages, bites, strikes; desire to escape; loss of consciousness; disinclined to talk; perversion of mental faculties; acuteness of all senses; changeableness.

Materia medica indications — میٹیریا میڈیکا میں مذکور کیفیات

Head: Vertigo, with falling to left side or backwards; sensitive to least contact; much throbbing and heat; palpitation reverberating in head with laboured breathing; pain, fullness, especially in forehead, also occiput and temples; headache from suppressed catarrh; sudden onset and sudden cessation; bores head into pillow; drawn backward and rolled from side to side; constant moaning; one-sided headache, right; worse lying down; better pressure and semi-erect position; headache worse in sun, jar, light, noise.

Eyes: Throbbing deep in eyes on lying down; pupils dilated; eyes feel swollen and protruding, staring, brilliant; conjunctiva red; dry, burn; photophobia; shooting in eyes; exophthalmus; ocular illusions; fiery appearance; diplopia, squinting, spasms of lids; sensation as if eyes were half closed; eyelids swollen.

آنکھیں: لیٹنے پر آنکھوں میں گہری دھڑکن؛ پتلیاں پھیلی؛ آنکھیں سوجی اور ابھری، گھورتی، چمکدار؛ آنکھ کی جھلی سرخ؛ خشک، جلتی؛ روشنی سے حساسیت؛ آنکھوں میں برق نما درد؛ نظر کے وہم؛ آتشیں ظاہری حال؛ دہری نظر، بھینگا پن، پلکوں کا تشنج؛ جیسے آنکھیں آدھی بند ہوں؛ پلکیں سوجی۔

Ears: Tearing pain in middle and external ear; humming noises; membrana tympani bulges and is injected; parotid gland swollen; sensitive to loud tones; otitis media — pain severe, throbbing, with redness; child cries out in sleep.

Face: Red, bluish-red, hot, swollen, shining; convulsive movements of facial muscles; upper lip swollen; facial neuralgia with twitching of muscles and flushed face.

Mouth: Dry; throbbing in teeth; gumboil; tongue red on edges; strawberry tongue; grinding of teeth; tongue swollen and painful; stammering.

Throat: Dry, as if glazed; angry looking congestion; red, worse on right side; tonsils enlarged; throat feels constricted; difficult deglutition; worse liquids; sensation of a lump; oesophagus dry; feels contracted; spasms in throat; continual inclination to swallow; scraping sensation; muscles of deglutition very sensitive.

Stomach: Loss of appetite; aversion to meat and milk; spasmodic pain in epigastrium; constriction; pain goes to spine; nausea and vomiting; great thirst for cold water; spasm of stomach; empty retching; abhorrence of drinks; vomiting, with great anxiety.

معدہ: بھوک کی کمی؛ گوشت اور دودھ سے بیزاری؛ معدے کی جگہ تشنجی درد؛ تنگی؛ درد ریڑھ تک؛ متلی اور قے؛ ٹھنڈے پانی کی شدید پیاس؛ معدے کا تشنج؛ خالی ابکائی؛ مشروبات سے نفرت؛ شدید گھبراہٹ کے ساتھ قے۔

Abdomen: Distended, hot; transverse colon protrudes like a pad; tender, swollen; pain as if clutched by a hand; worse jar, pressure; cutting pain across; stitches in left side of abdomen when coughing, sneezing or touching it; extreme sensitiveness to touch, bed-clothes, etc.

پیٹ: پھولا، گرم؛ بڑی آنت گدی کی طرح ابھری؛ حساس، سوجا؛ جیسے ہاتھ سے جکڑا گیا ہو؛ جھٹکے، دباؤ سے بڑھے؛ آر پار کاٹنے والا درد؛ کھانسنے، چھینکنے یا چھونے پر پیٹ کی بائیں طرف چبھن؛ لمس، بستر کے کپڑے وغیرہ سے انتہائی حساسیت۔

Urinary: Retention; acute urinary infections; sensation of motion in bladder as of a worm; urine scanty, with tenesmus; dark and turbid, loaded with phosphates; vesical region sensitive; incontinence, continued dribbling; frequent and profuse; enuresis.

پیشاب کے اعضاء: پیشاب رکنا؛ پیشاب کی شدید سوزش؛ مثانے میں کیڑے کی حرکت جیسا احساس؛ زور کے ساتھ کم پیشاب؛ گہرا اور گدلا؛ مثانے کی جگہ حساس؛ پیشاب پر قابو نہ ہونا، مسلسل قطرے؛ بار بار اور زیادہ؛ بستر گیلا کرنا۔

Female: Sensitive forcing downward, as if all the viscera would protrude at genitals; dryness and heat of vagina; dragging around loins; pain in sacrum; menses increased; bright red, too early, too profuse; haemorrhages hot; cutting pain from hip to hip; menses and lochia very offensive and hot; labour-pains come and go suddenly; mastitis, pains throbbing, redness, streaks radiate from nipple; breasts feel heavy; are hard and red; dysmenorrhoea; offensive, haemorrhagic leucorrhoea.

Respiratory: Dryness in nose, fauces, larynx and trachea; tickling, short, dry cough, worse at night; larynx very painful; feels as if a foreign body were in it, with cough; high, piping voice; moaning at every breath; barking cough, whooping cough, with pain in stomach before attack, with bloody expectoration; stitches in chest when coughing; larynx feels sore; respiration oppressed, quick, unequal; croup-like breathing; hoarseness; loss of voice; painless aphonia.

نظامِ تنفس: ناک، حلق اور سانس کی نالی میں خشکی؛ گدگداتی، چھوٹی، خشک کھانسی، رات کو بڑھے؛ حلق بہت دردناک؛ جیسے اندر کوئی چیز ہو، کھانسی کے ساتھ؛ اونچی، باریک آواز؛ ہر سانس پر کراہنا؛ بھونکنے والی کھانسی، کالی کھانسی، دورے سے پہلے معدے میں درد، خون آلود بلغم؛ کھانستے وقت سینے میں چبھن؛ حلق دکھتا؛ سانس دبی، تیز، بے ترتیب؛ آواز بیٹھنا؛ آواز کی بندش؛ بغیر درد آواز کا جانا۔

Extremities: Shooting pains along limbs; joints swollen, red, shining, with red streaks radiating; tottering gait; shifting rheumatic pains; tearing pains in legs; involuntary limping; cold extremities; jerking of limbs; spasms.

اعضاء (ہاتھ پاؤں): اعضاء میں برق نما درد؛ جوڑ سوجے، سرخ، چمکدار، پھیلتی سرخ لکیروں کے ساتھ؛ لڑکھڑاتی چال؛ جگہ بدلتے گٹھیا کے درد؛ ٹانگوں میں چیرنے والا درد؛ بے اختیار لنگڑانا؛ ٹھنڈے ہاتھ پاؤں؛ اعضاء کے جھٹکے؛ تشنج۔

Skin: Dry and hot; swollen, sensitive; burns, scarlet, smooth; eruption like scarlatina, suddenly spreading; alternate redness and pallor of skin; induration after inflammation; erysipelas; boils; acne rosacea; suppurative wounds.

جلد: خشک اور گرم؛ سوجی، حساس؛ جلتی، سرخ، ہموار؛ سرخ بخار جیسے دانے جو اچانک پھیلیں؛ جلد کی باری باری سرخی اور زردی؛ سوزش کے بعد سختی؛ سرخ باد؛ پھوڑے؛ چہرے کی سرخی؛ پیپ والے زخم۔

Sleep: Restless; cries out; screams out in sleep; sleepy but cannot sleep; jerking during sleep; starts as if in fright; sleeps with hands under head; dreams of falling.

نیند: بے چین؛ چیخنا؛ نیند میں چیخ اٹھنا؛ نیند آئے مگر سو نہ سکے؛ نیند میں جھٹکے؛ ڈر کر چونکنا؛ ہاتھ سر کے نیچے رکھ کر سونا؛ گرنے کے خواب۔

Fever: A high fever with comparative absence of toxaemia; burning, pungent, steaming heat; feet icy cold; superficial blood vessels distended; perspiration dry only on head; no thirst with fever.

بخار: نسبتاً کم زہریلے پن کے ساتھ تیز بخار؛ جلتی، تیز، بھاپ جیسی گرمی؛ پاؤں برفانی ٹھنڈے؛ سطحی خون کی نالیاں پھیلی؛ صرف سر پر پسینہ؛ بخار میں پیاس نہیں۔

Modalities: Worse: touch, jar, noise, draught, after noon, lying down. Better: semi-erect.

کمی بیشی: بڑھتی ہے: لمس، جھٹکا، شور، ہوا کا جھونکا، دوپہر کے بعد، لیٹنا۔ بہتر: نیم سیدھی حالت۔

Relationships: Complementary: Calcarea — Belladonna is often required in acute diseases of a Calcarea constitution. Antidotes: Camphor, Coffea, Opium, Aconite. Compare: Atropinum, Hyoscyamus, Stramonium, Glonoine, Aconite, Gelsemium.
